The DECADE in Review

DVD movies in the home and automobile, “flat-screen” TV sets, GPS devices in cell phones and on dashboards, etc.; none of these things were in use or at least common at the beginning of 2000. And that is only a small glimpse of the electronics technology side of the changes that we have seen in the past decade. A detailed list of other areas of changed life in the decade is long – too long to compile in this article.

It seems only yesterday that “Y2K” was the buzz-word and the resultant fear that had gripped the whole world.  You remember all the talk about “embedded micro-chips” that could not be replaced and would send the world back to the Stone Age? Many well-known ministers picked up that ball and ran the course with it in their messages; TV/video tapes, audio messages (cassette & CD – yes, they used cassettes back in those days – but CD was fairly new in ministry communications, especially recording of CD’s!), and public appearances. When they used the code word, embedded micro-chips, it was obvious that they were ALL reading from the same news reports of misinformed TV and print commentators – fear mongers, all!

I was employed in Information Technology for the government at the time and MY pulpit message was that the computer problem, like most “bugs” and “viruses,” can be simply and quickly corrected. True, many companies, banks and government agencies spent billions of dollars for the “specialty companies” to come in and “correct” the problem. My unanswered question was, “how could these people be specialists in correcting a problem that has NEVER been experienced on planet Earth”? Yet, the ball fell at midnight 2000 and, lo and behold, except for a very few minor anomalies, everything worked!

It is easy to be a “Monday-morning-quarterback” and backward-analyze why things worked as well as they did, but I made the “call” before the Y2K event occurred. It was NOT because of my technical knowledge, but my confidence and trust in a God who had the amelioration of His creation in His heart. His plan worked; He took care of His people!

Shortly after the Y2K scenario, and under leadership of a new President and administration, we experienced “9-11”. This event, unlike the technical headaches of Y2K, changed the United States and indeed the whole world. It switched from technical vexations (easily correctable) to radical religious idealism, to which we had not been exposed since this Nation was formed over 230 years ago. These “idealistic actions” of radicals would be hard if not impossible to stop.

After the 9-11 invasion, retaliatory war followed, on at least two fronts. Much of that was controversial and is still being debated, yet the war continues.

Now, we have a new administration and, although there is much talk about “inheriting” situations from the past, recent and otherwise, the fact is that any administration is sworn to preserve the safety, security and freedom of the Nation! Every new administration inherits or takes over where the previous one left off – regardless of the ramifications! The candidates were aware of what they were being handed  (inheriting) but they chose, if elected, to accept the responsibility of running the government – regardless!

With that in mind, and looking forward into the new decade, this is a good time for people to make predictions. However, I won’t do that!  What I will do is to “observe” that the events that are stated in the Bible that would signal the beginning of the “end-time” scenario appear to be coming to fruition. Yes, things ARE shaping up for that to start, but no one knows the “hour and the day” for that period to begin – which culminates in Armageddon, ending with the return of Jesus, the Christ, to the earth !

Without voicing a “political” stand, I would encourage ALL to come together as a nation and “fight” to maintain the “platform”, the structure  of our age-old commitment and responsibility to preserve the ideals upon which this country was founded!
