Birth – It’s NO Accident!

Everyone at one point in his or her life, especially in the early pre-teen years, has thought about his birth. The most frequent question is, “am I adopted”?  Especially if you had brothers or sisters, you make “comparisons” with them and they may seem to be totally different from you!

Of course most of us were “naturally” born into our family, even with the apparent differences. As with a litter of puppies or kittens, there usually will be at least one that will look like it doesn’t belong to the litter.

Fortunately, we ARE different from our siblings. It would be “strange” if we were all clones of one another! While we may all carry some family characteristics, God made each of us just a little unique. In my own family, my big brother leaned toward skills in the artistic world. I was blessed with technical/mechanical skills. And, my middle brother – well, he was the “ladies man”! My only sister got the looks and “book-larnen” abilities.

However, even IF you were adopted, so what? God’s Word says that He knew us in our mother’s womb. That is the key thing – - – God knows ALL about us. For whatever the circumstance for which you were adopted out, receive it as a blessing that you weren’t aborted! Run with what you have, and make the best of it. There are SO many adopted people in our history who lived exemplary lives: scientists, doctors, astronauts, presidents. They didn’t center on their past but to the future, and most of us have been blessed through their accomplishments.

Our first child, Tracie (you can read her story over there, on the right »), was adopted. My wife and I purposed to tell her those “facts of her life” as soon as she was old enough to understand – before she entered school. She grew up knowing about her adoption.

When she reached age eighteen, the legal age in Tennessee, her birth state, to have the court records opened so she could learn who her real parents were, she declined the opportunity. She blessed Teresa and me when she replied, “I don’t need to know my birth parents, you are my mom and dad”!

There are many Scriptural references where God “spoke” to say that He formed us in the womb, and knew each of us even before He forged the earth. So, children are important to God. He has a purpose for each of us, regardless of circumstances of our birth and our growing up. Here are just a few of the more successful adoptees:

Art Linkletter -TV comedian – Show Host Charlotte Anne Lopez –Miss Teen USA
Daunte Culpepper – Football Player Dave Thomas – Founder of Wendy’s
Faith Hill – County Music Singer Eleanor Roosevelt – First Lady
George Washington Carver – Inventor John Lennon – of “The Beatles
Melissa Gilbert – Actress (“Little House – - ”) Gerald Ford – President
Steve Jobs – Inventor, Apple Computer William Clinton – President
Nat “King” Cole – Singer Nelson Mandella – 1st South African President
Jesus – Adopted by Joseph the Carpenter Nancy Reagan – First Lady

Strangely, genealogy appears to be a big issue in the Bible where it details who “begat” whom for many generations. However, there are a number of accounts of children who were adopted and did many fabulous “works of God”. Other than Jesus, the most prominent was Moses, who was adopted by Pharaoh’s daughter after she found him in a reed basket floating in a river .  Except for perhaps a president, no one else “lead” so many of God’s children in a time of great need!

I am in (Internet) communication with a 17-year-old young man who lives in a village in Africa. He has stated that his goal is to become a doctor. Guess what? He will make it! He is not adopted but he will surpass his meager environmental beginnings because his heart is driving him and in doing so, will be very successful.

The main purpose of this writing is to affirm that we have NO control of our birth or the environment into which we are born. Yet, we DO have control and the RESPONSIBILITY to make the most out of our lives. Review the list above and be encouraged that YOU can “go — all — the — way”!

Okay, look at the list one more time as you reflect on the expression, “God doesn’t make junk.”

That includes each one of us.
